Aus "AirWise" März 2005:
""European airports think a new US rule banning passengers from carrying cigarette lighters on planes was pointless and unworkable, an industry group said on Thursday.
The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has said passengers cannot carry butane, battery powered or other lighters on themselves or in carry-on bags after April 14.
"The banning of lighters at US airports by the TSA seems to have no grounding in reality," said Roy Griffins, Director General of airports group ACI Europe, in a statement.
"Security measures must be commensurate with the level of threat, be sustainable in the long term, be cost effective and capable of inspiring public confidence and they must be workable in practice," he said.
"I fear that this new initiative fails to impress on all counts."
The group complained that the TSA had started the measures without consulting European counterparts and called for more coordination in facing threats to air travel security in the future.
The measure has been touted by proponents such as Democratic Senator Byron Dorgan, who said it was necessary to reduce the chance that someone could ignite a bomb or incendiary device on a commercial flight.
Dorgan says "shoe bomber" Richard Reid may have succeeded in blowing up a passenger plane on a trans-Atlantic flight in 2001 had he used a lighter instead of common matches to set off explosives hidden in his shoe. Reid was sentenced to life in prison in 2003.(Reuters)""
