CORPORATE, ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY : The ethos of Karongwe Portfolio is to make a difference and we believe the projects we run do make a significant contribution. This is evident in the gratitude we receive from the community and close relationship that exists between Karongwe Portfolio and its local communities. Recycling: On recycling - Karongwe Portfolio has a recycle project in all of the lodges - separating plastics, glass and biodegradable objects from each other and sending it to the necessary recycling plants. Plastic: Karongwe Portfolio is also in the process of doing away with all plastic water bottles and promote the use of glass / steel flasks instead. In addition, all plastic straws have been removed from January 2020 and we make a concerted effort to reduce all plastics. Cheetah project: As the world cheetah meta - population is in decline Karongwe works with EWT (Endangered Wildlife Trust ) in donating to this worthwhile Trust to the protection of cheetah. Karongwe is currently a gold status member in the Cheetah program. Tree planting: Karongwe Portfolio has also embarked on a huge Spekboom challenge - (i.e. planting the wonderful tree that absorbs a huge amount of carbon dioxide) engaging with guests to join us in the local community to plant trees. This is on our activity list and entails the planting of a tree in the local village - guests are given a complimentary T shirt “I planted a tree in Africa at Karongwe” Vegetable project: Our little paws children program also includes a children’s activity that involves the planting of vegetables - the garden is cared for by the lodge and the vegetables are taken to the local community drop in centre for vulnerable children. The idea behind this is “one child feeds another “, and we believe creates awareness across cultures of caring and also growing organic natural foods. Drop in Centre for Vulnerable Children: Karongwe Portfolio is responsible for two Drop in centres in the two neighbouring villages. This involves the renovation of the centre, providing of furniture desks and amenities to the children. Karongwe Portfolio also supplies the food for these children on a daily basis and we encourage our guests to visit these centres. Schools: Top priority for Karongwe Portfolio is our school projects. - All the High schools are given intense talks motivational speeches on education. In addition - financial rewards are given the Top 5 in each grade in an effort to encourage performance. Regular visits from the Lodges and talks are planned for 2020 - At the Secondary School level Karongwe runs conservation projects that bring the youngsters to the Reserve to experience first - hand game drives and the tourism industry. - At primary and pre-primary level Karongwe Lodges have a long history of taking care of the little ones - especial over Christmas - making it special for them. - Karongwe Portfolio also supports certain successful students with tertiary studies and are proud to have supported our first lawyer in his studies as well as photographer. Sports Teams: Karongwe Portfolio has in the last year sponsored over 8 soccer teams and netball teams. Since we believe physical fitness is important this has also gone a long way to keep youngsters from the taverns and streets. Training for young adults: Karongwe Portfolio Lodges run a training program for youngsters in the area that are interested in the Tourism industry. The training is done in Food and Beverage, Housekeeping and the Kitchen. This has resulted in a number of students being successful in getting employment in the surrounding lodges. In house training: Karongwe Lodges run a program to train spa therapists as well as Field Guides. This is an effort to upskill the existing staff all the time to improve their standards of living and expertise. The elderly: Karongwe Portfolio is committed to our program to support our churches in the villages and local community. Since the churches do a significant amount of care for the elderly this has worked well for us to work together with them to assist where possible. Currently 18 churches are on the Karongwe Lodges list for support and this has had very positive results.
