Built around 1135, it passed hands many times and was involved in several wars. In 1689 the castle was decisively destroyed. Reconstruction began in the early 20th century but stopped and started again due to the world wars, finishing in 1967.

Longhouse, former boys' hostel. It has a ground floor of crushed stone and a Fachwerk first floor. The slate roof has a dormer on the courtyard side with a curved gable.

This is the entrance from the road.
A stone bridge leads over the moat to the main entrance; the gateway is guarded by an embrasured turret above and leads to an elongated outer ward.
The water-filled partial moat is a rarity in Germany.

This sidewalk goes around the castle and leads you to the spot where one trail goes down to the city (steep trail) and the other meanders along the city walls.

The round tower is 7.5m in diameter which stands on bedrock in the center of the courtyard. It has walls 2m thick and is topped by a 16m cone-shaped roof. The top floor, 4m high, was added later, which can be seen from the different color stone.
