Im byzantinischen Reich war Thessaloniki die zweitwichtigste Stadt. Und wenn man zu der von einer starken Befestigungsmauer umgebenen Akropolis hoch über der Stadt kommt, erhält man einen Eindruck von der Bedeutung, die diesem Ort beigemessen wurde. Durch eines der zwei Tore kann man die Festungsanlage betreten, die heutzutage ein Kulturzentrum mit Museum ist, ursprünglich aber militärisch eine wichtige Rolle spielte und zeitweise als Gefängnis genutzt wurde.
