Der kleine Ort am nördlichen Ufer des Sognefjords ist ein beliebter Ferienort und hat ein besonders schönes und luxeriöses Hotel, in dem schon der deutsche Kaiser Wilhelm II. Urlaub machte. Der Hafen dient vor allem als Anlegestelle für die Personen- und Autofähren, die Balestrand mit den Nachbarorten und mit Bergen verbinden.
